Lewis Crozer Library in Chester invites you to join us in celebrating African
American history, culture, and achievement during Black History Month this

During the month of February, the Crozer Library Coin Drive aims to raise $500 for the Crozer Library Afterschool Program, which provides homework help, tutoring, and mentoring to Chester elementary-school students. Donations are accepted during normal library hours. Thank you for your generous support!
The Chester community gathers on Saturday, February 2nd from 1:00-2:30p.m. to celebrate “2013 The Village…Honoring Our Ancestors, Families, & Communities, Past & Present.” Special guests include: community activist Cory Long; performance artist Tara Jones, interpretive dancer DaeYahn “Daisy” Elliott; and community organization ProjectButterfly.
On Friday, February 8th from 1:00 – 2:30p.m., investigate strategies for researching African American Genealogy using resources available at Delaware County public libraries as well as other local organizations.
Just try not to sing and dance along as Jon Turk performs your favorite Motown hits! On Saturday, February 9th from 1:00 – 2:00p.m., learn the historical context of your Motown favorites.
Experience “Moving Perspectives on Dance” on Saturday, February 16th from 10:30a.m. – 12:00 noon. Dr. Patricia Reid-Merrit will trace African elements of American dances, from traditional to hip-hop. The Outreach Lecture Program is funded by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
Enjoy an afternoon of African American history spanning multiple centuries on Saturday, February 16th from 1:00 – 3:00p.m. Ms. Jean Arnold will portray Sojourner Truth. Share in commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. Sponsored by the National Congress of Black Women, Delaware County Chapter.
On Tuesday evening, February 19th from 6:00 – 7:45p.m., learn the captivating story of the African prince who refused to lose his dignity as we view the documentary Prince Among Slaves. Mustafa Ahmed, Ph.D. of the Foundation for Islamic Education will lead a discussion highlighting connections between Islam and Africans stolen into slavery.
Families are invited to an afternoon of storytelling in the African American tradition on Saturday, February 23rd from 1:00 – 3:30p.m. Three storytellers from Keepers of the Culture, Philadelphia's Afrocentric Storytelling Group, will share “Tales of the Trickster.” Generously sponsored by the Friends of the J. Lewis Crozer Library.
